Abbey St Bathan's, Scotland

George Aitchison (see previous post) was born in 1838 at Abbey St Bathans which is a small farming district in Berwickshire, Scotland. His dad was James Aitchison and his mum was Janet Fortune. They married in 1827 in Abbey St Bathan's - she was 'of this parish' and he was from the nearby parish of Coldingham.

Janet Fortune was born in 1797 in Lonformacus, Berwickshire. Her parents were Thomas Fortune b. 1760 and Janet Waldie b. 1765.

James Aitchison was born in 1796 in Haddingtonshire, Scotland. His parents were Peter Aitchison b. 1752 and Magdalene Fife b. 1753 or 63? They married in 1787. Below is their headstone inscription from Coldingham Priory churchyard:

Headstone Inscription: Sacred to the Memory of Peter Aitchison late tennant in Greenwood, who departed this life 12th May Aged 57 years. also his wife Magdalene Fife who departed this life 7 December 1811 Aged 48 years. also three of their children Alison, James and Jane who died in infancy and their son James Aitchison Farmer, formerly of Abbey St Bathans and at Harehead 7th Sept 1796 died at Wellfield Duns 25 Apr 1888. also Magdalene Aitchison their daughter who died at Lawfoot Cottages, Duns 8 Jun 1902 aged 67 years. 

Peter's dad was also called James born 1732.

Magdalene Fife's parents were John Fife and Magdalene France. They married in 1744 in Coldingham.
