Awamoko is a tiny district in the Waitaki valley, North Otago, NZ. This is where my great grandmother, Janet Aitchison grew up. Her parents were George and Phoebe Aitchison who married in 1880.
Janet had an older brother, James born 1880 and a sister, Alice born 1881. Janet was born in 1884.
The family farm was close to their uncle's farm, Peter Aitchison. This was part of the Waikoura run which had been sold off in smaller blocks. George and Phoebe's farm was next to the school as mentioned in this 1893 item from the Papers Past website, entitled Picnic at Awamoko:

The article also mentions Janet, Alice and James in the childrens' running races. Simple country fun!
I remember another picnic at Awamoko domain attended by descendents of George and Phoebe. It would have been early 1970s when James' daughter and her husband sold the farm. It was a lovely sunny day and a great chance for a family get together. Was there again recently with Mum and two of her cousins and we stopped for a cuppa under the shady trees at the domain. Another hot, sunny day up the valley. There is still a road called Aitchison road at Awamoko.
