Janet's mum - my great, great grandmother - was born in 1847 in Tipperary, Ireland.
Her name was Phoebe Lucille Estelle Alice Lloyd. See previous post for her photo.
She came out to NZ in the 1870s with her sister Matilda Corinne Lloyd and both worked in domestic service in Oamaru. Phoebe married George Aitchison in Oamaru in 1880.
The two sisters came to NZ, a land of opportunity I suppose, their brother, Horatio Albyn Lloyd having inherited the family farm back in Ireland. I don't think they ever travelled back to visit their family?
Corinne never married but her death certificate shows that she had a female child. Not sure if the child was adopted out? I will try to find out more about that. Sadly she died in 1882 aged just 46 years, of infection and exhaustion.
She is buried in the Oamaru cemetery a little way inside the north-east (Greta st) entrance. According to H she used to have a large headstone marking her grave. I guess George and Phoebe paid for that, or perhaps family back in Ireland?
Anyway the headstone is now gone! What happened was in the late 1970s the Oamaru Council did some 'remodelling' work and some headstones were removed and used as fill in the harbour. Apparently this was considered OK if no living relatives could be found.
By the time the family discovered what had happened, it was too late, although a complaint was lodged later by a great-niece. All very sad really.
