Her parents were Lydia and Arthur Hitchcox. When Emily was aged twelve the family emigrated to Dunedin, NZ aboard the ship 'Scimitar' in 1874. Many children died on this ship due to an outbreak of measles and also scarlet fever. Luckily, Emily and her younger sisters Fanny and Phoebe arrived safely in Dunedin. Another sister (Bertha) and a brother (Charles) were born here in NZ.

Emily married Charles Town Williams, a carpenter, in 1883 and they had five children: Fred, Kate, Philip, Doris, and Marion.

Their son Philip died of Diphtheria aged nine which must have been very sad for the family. At some stage Emily and her husband seperated and Emily lived in Macandrew Bay while her husband Charles moved to Palmerston. I think Emily was a seamstress and worked from home.
Here is a photo of Emily having a cup of tea in the garden. She looks to be a sensible soul.
