Frederick & Janet HARGREAVES were my great, great grandparents.
They met and married in 1893 at Brunnerton, a coal mining village near Greymouth on the wild West Coast of the South Island, NZ.
Frederick was born in Dunedin in 1866.
Janet was born in Drumgelloch, near Glasgow, Scotland in 1875.
The children of Fred & Janet were:
William born 1893 - married Myrtle Gibson (one son?) - died in 1962 ten days after his wife.
Mary Ellen born 1894 - died 1962, had daughter Freda, was deaf & mute, married later in life aged 48 to a returned soldier Walter Young. NB Walter was not the father of Freda.
Florence Janet born 1897 - died 1966, spinster, was deaf & mute.
The youngest child Agnes Harriet was born 1904 in Dunedin. She was known as Aggie and married a Mr Simpson and had four children. Aggie died in 1998 aged 94.
In 1896 there was an explosion at the Brunnerton mine which killed 67 men. Luckily our Fred was not among them, although he did die a few years later of a chronic lung disease due to being a miner. Here is a photo of the explosion rescue party - I wonder if Fred is one of these chaps?
