Janet Hargreaves (nee Walker) was my great, great grandmother. She was born in April 1875 in Drumgelloch near Glasgow, Scotland. Her parents were William Walker*, a coal miner and Mary Walker, nee McKee.
*Update 2020 Re:Janet's father. I had thought that her father was William Walker, since that's who her mother married, and Janet was their 2nd child with William as father on her birth certificate. However, due to DNA matching to folk who fit no other branch line, I now believe Janet's father to be Richard Carruthers born 1840 Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland, died 1907 Milton, Otago, New Zealand.
DNA proves the McKee line so the maternal line is correct.
The family emigrated to New Zealand and settled in Brunnerton on the West coast of the South Island. This was coal mining country and there is a rich history of the families and towns that flourished during that boom time.
Some of Janet's siblings were born in Scotland, and some in NZ. I don't have a picture of Janet but here is a pic of her younger sister Agnes which I found on a relatives ancestry tree. She looks to be a cheerful person.
In 1893 Janet married Frederick Hargreaves in Brunnerton, near Greymouth. Their children were William born 1893, Mary Ellen born 1894, Florence Janet born 1897and Agnes Harriet born 1904.
Line of descent: Me - Dad - Freda - Mary Ellen - Janet and Frederick Hargreaves.
