William was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England approx 1833, to parents James Hargreaves and Mary (nee Slater). Some sources suggest that prior to arriving in NZ he was already married and had a son Thomas. If it's true that would make him a bigamist - yikes!
Note - DNA has now proved this story. Descendents of William and his first wife share DNA with our Caversham, Dunedin Hargreaves folk.
William married Ellen WHITE in 1864 at St Paul's church Dunedin. He was 26, she was only15!
They lived in the suburb of Caversham and had fifteen children:
William worked as a carter and was later a contractor for the Caversham Borough Council. He died in 1911 - here is the death certificate:
