Tom York's mother was Cecilia. She was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1841. Her parents were William IRWIN, a school teacher and Jane nee ERSKINE. Cecilia had three sisters - Susanna, Jane and Olivia. On the census Olivia is transposed as Oliver so we thought it was a brother, however a relative assures me it was a sister. She married a Mr Bald and stayed in England. Jane married William Leonard and travelled to Australia. Later, Cecilia and Susanna followed in 1855 on the ship 'Tornado'. Susanna married Henry Winter. I think the parents died but I cannot find that info. There may have been brothers also, incl a William jnr? (Thanks L for your help:)
Here they are in the 1841 Scotland census:
Here is a pic of Cecilia (I think) I did show this to my Gran a couple of years ago, and she said yes she thought it was her Gran. She remembers oval photographs of her York grandparents at home when she was younger. Not sure where those copies are now?
Possibly Cecilia with one of her ten children
Cecilia or maybe one of her sisters?
An interesting fact about Edward and Cecilia is that they married later in life, after they'd had their children. They may have needed a marriage certificate to claim the old age pension?
Finally, here is her obituary from the local paper (click to enlarge image)
Line of descent: me - Mum - Marjory - Thomas - Cecilia - William & Jane
